Research Activity
My research interests are the mechanisms and control of placental transport of nutrients from mother to fetus. As a clinical research fellow at the University of Manchester , I worked in Professor Sir Robert Boyd's laboratory in Manchester and used the in situ placental perfusion technique to examine the effect of maternal diabetes mellitus on maternofetal transport of calcium and magnesium in an animal model. This work led to my MD degree.
I have successfully developed and validated the in situ placental perfusion technique in the mouse. This has not been achieved before and is attracting attention in the world of placentology because of its potential in studying control of placental transport at the molecular level using knockout mice. In collaboration with colleagues in Manchester , the technique is being used to examine the role of fetal PTHrP in the PTHrP knockout mouse.
