Biography

I am Professor of Pathology Education and Honorary Consultant in Histopathology. My major fields of interest are medical education and gastrointestinal pathology, in which I have a national reputation. For many years I have been Director of Pathology teaching at Barts and the London , but also have a wider role in curriculum development and management and running examinations. I am currently Lead Teacher for the Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Science. I am an external examiner for several universities and also examine for the Royal College of Pathologists and the Royal College of Surgeons. I have also held several positions of responsibility in relation to postgraduate education, including educational supervisor and regional advisor in postgraduate education.

I am currently Registrar of the Royal College of Pathologists and so am involved in many national initiatives such as the development of new workload guidelines in histopathology. I sit on several national committees and chair the Education subcommittee of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland . I am keen on improving the public and media image of pathology and have contributed to several radio programs and to the television news, particularly during the media coverage of organ retention.

Outside of work my main passion is Chelsea football club (predating Abramovich by many years) and most of my Saturday afternoons are spent strolling down the Fulham Road to Stamford Bridge stadium. Any spare time after that is devoted to running, yoga and trekking. As is evident from my name, my ethnic origin is Italian and I am a proud italophile, my particular passions being spaghetti alle vongole, Ferrari cars and the Azzuri national football team.
