An outstanding performance in RAE2008
The Institute returned over 60 academic staff in Unit of Assessment 4 – Hospital Based Clinical Subjects – of RAE2008. In addition to research outputs in top ranking specialist journals, BICMS staff in this return published their research findings in the highest impact general journals including Science (6 publications), Nature journals (24), Lancet (26) and PNAS (17). The total research expenditure over the RAE period was £33.7 million. On the basis of these submissions, 15% of the Institute’s research outputs were considered world class and a further 65% internationally excellent. These combined scores placed the Institute in joint first position out of twenty eight medical school returns in Hospital Based Clinical Subjects in the UK.

The annual research income of the Blizard Institute in 2008/9 was in excess of £13million and major research funders include the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Wellcome Trust.
