After completing a BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences at Kings College London in 2001, Lara spent 3 years working as part of a research team from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine studying malarial drug resistance. In 2004 she then joined an HIV Clinical Trials Unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London while studying for an MSc in Medical Microbiology at the University of Westminster, London, and carried out a research project into the incidence of human herpevirus-8 in HIV-infected males at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. During her time at Chelsea and Westminster she became particularly interested in clinical trial research and clinical trial management and after becoming deputy laboratory manager in this post decided to focus on this area of clinical trials. She joined the Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit in 2009.
