Following a degree in Applied Social Psychology in Cardiff, Moira trained as a psychiatric nurse at the Maudsley & Bethlem Hospital Trust. She then worked in clinical research at the Maudsley and at St Christopher’s Hospice, and at Goldsmiths on a study about hospice and hospital care for people who die from cancer.
Moira was a research manager at the Health Education Authority for four years before joining Queen Mary in 2000 as a research fellow. During this time she completed a PhD in Sociology which was supervised by David Silverman at Goldsmiths. Since 2003, Moira has been actively involved in a range of teaching roles in the School of Medicine including medical sociology teaching, communication skills training, project supervision, and student support.
Moira has a broad background in applied health research, but her current research interests lie in qualitative studies of chronic disease, media representations of health issues, and health care communication in clinical settings. She is currently engaged in a study of communication about diabetes in primary care using conversation analysis, with Clive Seale and Carol Rivas.
Moira also supervises PhD students and offers qualitative research advice and support to Queen Mary staff and others in one-to-one sessions and workshops.
