Post-doctoral research fellow

Prior to his time at the Wingate Institute, John was employed as an assay development pharmacologist by Pfizer in the pain therapeutic area. He designed native tissue, primary and secondary pharmacology assays for a number of different pain targets. During his PhD (Glasgow University), John investigated the effect of cognitive enhancing strategies on the neurophysiology of the hippocampus. His degree in Pharmacology was performed at Edinburgh University.

Project: Investigating the neurophysiology and pharmacology of human GI tissue

Compounds that alter gastric motility are useful in a number of discrete GI disorders. When designing compounds that facilitate or inhibit motility a major hurdle can be the translation of studies performed in animals to humans. In this project we use human tissue taken during surgery to investigate the physiology and pharmacology of motility strategies. In particular we investigate the role of the hormone motilin and its effects on the stomach.
