Aims of the Programme

This Programme aims to assist Refugee and Overseas Qualified Doctors based in and around London to pass the tests required before they can practice medicine in the UK. We offer a programme of PLAB courses and learning support for Refugee and Overseas Qualified Doctors working towards GMC registration so that they can re-enter medical practice.


Who is Eligible to Apply for the PLAB 1 and 2 Courses?

To apply, you must meet each and every one of the following four criteria:

  • Applicants must have permanent settled status. Please see the application pack below for more detail.
  • Applicants need to have an IELTS score of 7 or above with a minimum score of 6 in reading, writing and listening and 7 in speaking.
  • Applicants need to have a primary medical qualification that is recognised as such by the GMC.
  • Applicants must live within the M25.

If you do not currently meet each of these eligibility criteria, you will not be permitted to apply to this course.


Programme Details

Refugee and Overseas Qualified Doctors with Permanent Resident status will be able to apply for the following courses.

The PLAB 1 Course - Preparation Programme

  • Specialists will lead seminars on key topics
  • The course will run 1 day a day a week for two terms of ten weeks
  • There will be a mock PLAB1 exam

The PLAB 2 Course - Clinical and Communication Skills

  • Participants will polish their skills in physical examination and learn communication skills with patients and colleagues appropriate to the UK NHS setting
  • The course involves role-play in clinical scenarios and the use of the clinical skills laboratory
  • Excellent timetable of specialist speakers
  • Communication skills with professional actors
  • Practical skills assessment
  • The course will run 1 day a week for one term of eleven weeks
  • There will be a mock PLAB2 OSEE exam

IT Courses

  • Available to all the University's students including ours and all students will be expected to take the opportunity to learn skills necessary to their professional development.
  • Most of our communication with students off site is through e-mail.

The course is free of charge and Doctors enrolled on the programme will be registered students of Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry, which will allow access to:

  • Trust medical education meetings (eg. Medical Grand Round)
  • The college medical libraries for use of printed and electronic medical literature

There are several intakes each academic year.
