Biological Hazards using the cell sorter

Cell sorting live cells policy at The Blizard Institute

All cells to be sorted on the Flow Cytometry Core Facilities FACSAria have to be declared biological hazard free. All users have to fill in the form which is a downloadable pdf and requires 2 signatures, that of the researcher sorting cells and their supervisor. A BioCOSHH hazard form has also got to be supplied for the cells due to be sorted. (downloadable pdf)

Biological Hazard Form

Murine cells
Sorting these cells alive or fixed are allowed to be sorted as long as the fixative is removed before sorting. Cells can be sorted into a fixative or cell lysis buffer.

Human cells
These require to be fixed even if the source of the material has been screened for HIV, Hepatitis B and C. The fixative used must be also removed prior to sorting. Cells can be sorted into a fixative or cell lysis buffer.

GM
No material that is classed more than GM1 can be sorted and all lenti virus infected material must guaranteed virus free by PCR.
